What Exactly ARE EVP's, Anyway?

EVP = Electronic Voice Phenomenon

EVP's are anomalous voices and/or sounds that are captured on recording devices. Typically, they are not heard until the recording is later played.

These sounds are usually short sentences, or just words. They can sound male or female, like an adult or a child, and are sometimes very startling in just how clear they sound.

Sometimes, grunts or groans or growls are also captured in these recordings.

Those doing research into paranormal events will use various types of software to evaluate any recordings they take during an investigation, from the freely available Audacity program to some more expensive ones like the one Adobe offers. It is sometimes necessary to remove extraneous noise in order to more clearly hear the anomalous sound that has been recorded.

I truly believe that EVP's are an important body of evidence for possible proof of life beyond death.  EVP's have been recorded in many different languages, so it's not just a western phenomenon.  And many, many EVP's have been obtained as direct answers to questions that have been posed, which intimates actual interraction with whomever/whatever is being recorded.

It's a fascinating phenomenon, and is becoming focused on more and more in the investigations being performed by many groups.
